We usually would connotate a well-rounded student to be one which does literally everything from doing 13 clubs to playing piano so well it puts Beethoven to shame. We could also connotate that these students have no imperfections. However, this is not all good and this can have some disadvantages against this idea. Everyone would want to be more than just a one-trick pony and instead be a well-rounded student, but in reality, is this really that good?

Some people may state that being a well-rounded student could have numerous advantages. For example, from this they will have all the fundamental skills in life and inevitably not miss an opportunity for these such skills in their lifetime. Also, what wouldn’t be better than being able to show off all these skills on your CV? All these professional skills will have major impacts for your future and will take you to the next level, whatever that may be. Having all these skills ready handed also shows a paramount skill in your life — time management. All of these skills are invaluable and makes you shine like a star and stand out from the others and this is what universities are looking for, unique students. The well-known phrase ‘experience is the best teacher’ comes in handy when thinking about the numerous experiences these well-rounded students receive from the very start. As a domino effect this will help prepare the students for a range of challenges ahead of time.

On the other hand, being a well-rounded student can have some negative outcomes. When being a well-rounded student it is very likely that you may not be able to do everything at once. It comes to a stage where your stress levels go up and you cannot cope with this brain-hurting pressure. Being pulled in so many directions simply is not sustainable, yet we are told that this is an absolute requirement. This convention of wanting to become well rounded can slant to people with more resources and have a financially better in come etc. This system is not just, and it is no secret that families that can afford to help their kids with the financial burden of university will open various pathways to more opportunities that might not be an option for students in lower income brackets. Think about it anyone can become well-rounded if they spend the time and money into this. And when everyone is wanting to become well-rounded this no longer sets the student solely from the rest. ‘In a world where everyone is super…no one will be’. This is a statement from our childhood movies-The Incredibles. This a true notion and it is telling us in a world where everyone is trying to become a well-rounded student it will simply result in everyone being the same and therefore no longer special. To become a well-rounded student there are innumerable aspects which can make you accomplish your endeavour to become this student. However, as I have said time and money need to be used. In an anecdotal example, a student could have come from an unfortunate background where their parents were divorced this could cause a serious impact on student meaning that he/she is not able to become well-rounded as they may not have the money or they may not have the time as they are struggling with other situations such as their family issues. This will buy their time and have an impact on their life resulting that this student may not be able to become well-rounded.

In conclusion, I personally believe that whether you are a well-rounded student or not, the key for success is the passion you have. With passion there comes skills which then comes to the overall result of success. Imagine a well-rounded student but with no passion for the skills they have within them they will not succeed in life as they have no desire to use these skills beneficially and therefore no advantages come from this but frauds of being a well-rounded student when actually you are not. So, I would argue that having these skills and being passionate about them is the key to success.
